I grew up with both Jewish as well as Catholic family, and an adamantly atheist father. I was not raised religious myself, although we celebrated each side’s holidays, mainly as a way to gather and celebrate each other, rather than a God. I have always been fascinated by religious iconography and the thought of worship, and I appreciate the artfulness and admiration behind such works. I ultimately feel very disconnected from imagery like this because of how I grew up. The way the slit scanning manifests within the work demonstrates this interference with religion within my own life and work. Like anyone, I question what is out there. I question who is watching and listening, and what happens when we die. Who is in control? Is it a God? What God? Will they think that I am committing blasphemy by the way I have interacted with their likeness?
